Self-employed in Finland, working for a company abroad?
Ask the company for
โ
Annual compensation. Agree on a yearly number, not just monthly. It removes ambiguity about how many invoices per year.
Paid days off. How many vacation days do you get? Are they paid or unpaid? This changes the math significantly.
Public holidays. Are they paid? Which country's holidays apply โ yours or theirs? Finland has 9, but the employer's country might have different ones.
Sick days. What happens when you're sick? As a contractor you're not automatically covered. Get this in writing.
Equipment. Laptop, phone, monitors, software licenses. If they don't provide them, factor that into your rate.
Office costs. Co-working space, home office stipend, internet. Some companies offer a monthly allowance.
In-person meetups. Many remote companies fly the team together a few times a year. Clarify who pays for travel and accommodation.
Bonuses and equity. Some remote companies offer performance bonuses or stock options even to contractors. Worth asking about.
Trial period. How long is the trial, and what's the notice period during it? Some companies do 1โ3 months with shorter notice on both sides.
Notice period. After the trial, how much warning does either side need to give? 30 days is common, but make sure it works for both parties โ not just the company.
